Hyderabad law student in soup for FB comment on PM Modi

A young law student has landed in trouble for sharing a social media post with a comment about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the ongoing 'Padmavati' controversy. After questioning him for over 17 hours, he was finally let off on Sunday evening.

At 11.30pm on Saturday, Aarif Muhammad, a fourth-year law student of a college in Banjara Hills, was picked up by plainclothesmen while he was attending a function at Gudimalkapur, Mehdipatnam. He was let off by police only at 5pm on Sunday. What landed Aarif in soup was sharing an article published by a website, cathnews.com , quoting a Twitter post of a filmmaker offering Rs 1lakh reward for anyone who throws a slipper at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I was interrogated through the night and I explained to police that I had only shared an article posted on a website. They wanted to know if I had written the article and I clarified to them that I did not," 21-year-old Aarif told TOI on Sunday.

I could not complete comment and wanted to write good: Arif

After questioning by plainclothesmen, he was also subjected to more interrogation by a different set of police officers. He said he did not know who the people were who picked him up, but they had left him at the Gachibowli police station, where he was interrogated.

The basis of the article was the Twitter post on November 20 by Mumbai-based Ram Subramanian, whose twitter handle is VORdot.com . Subramanian, who describes himself as a writer and filmmaker, had said in his post, "I am offering Rs1 lakh to anyone who throws a chappal/shoe at Narendramodi. Welcome to the new Indian culture. Foundation laid by BJP4India."

Subramanian was reacting to 'Padmavati' controversy, wherein a BJP leader had placed a bounty of Rs10 cr on actor Deepika Padukone's head. Deepika has played the lead role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavati', which got mired in a controversy with its release put off until 2018.

The report about Subramanian making the Rs 1lakh offer to anyone throwing a slipper at Modi was shared by the Mumbai filmmaker's FB page 'VoiceofRam'.
